Canadian Memorial - What's Happening
|

JNAC
The "Joint Needs Assessment Committee" for Canadian Memorial
met for the first time on Sunday, May 4th to begin the job of discernment
around two central issues facing our congregation: the future of
Children's Church at CMUC and our minister, Bruce Sanguin's increasing need to
spend time in the wider community in response to his recently published books.
The committee members from our congregation are Anne Beer, Dorothy Buckland,
Linda Denham, Linda Gunn, Natalie Hall, Lee Kornder, Andy Maton, Ray McGinnis,
Rhiannon Morgan, Russ Quinn and Karen Vanderheyden. In addition, we are also
pleased to have two members of presbytery on our committee: Rev. David Ewart and
Sue Parker. We are planning to meet weekly, whenever possible, and
welcome
any input from the members of this congregation as we engage in this exciting
process!
Minister of
Children Youth and Families
Canadian Memorial united Church is will be
integrating our children and youth into the Congregation and worship in more
compelling and meaningful ways, and wants to provide more outreach and support
to families in our community.
We are seeking an individual for a part time (15 hrs per week)
position who will work independently and in consultation with the Christian
Education Committee to promote a dynamic child, youth and family ministry.
Applications and resumes can be e-mailed to
Linda Denham or delivered to the church
office in a sealed envelope addressed to Linda Denham. Deadline for
applications is August 15th. Feel free to pass this information to anyone you
know who may be interested.

"The Old Lady Needs
a New Hat"
The Sanctuary of Canadian Memorial is 80 years old this year, and
the roof is, too! Imagine the stories this roof could tell from all those years;
imagine all the thousands of people that have been protected by her over that
time span, and imagine any modern roof lasting that long!
We are gearing up for the replacement of the roof (in about 2010-11) by
initiating a capital fundraising campaign. Over the next couple of months, a
roof committee will be struck to steward the project and to kick fundraising
into high gear. In the meantime, people have been generously donating to the
fund through supporting efforts such as the Raise The Roof rock/gospel concert
at the church back in March (and if you missed it, you should be kicking
yourself), as well as the ongoing, "Thunderbird mobile" campaign.

Join the Flock - Buy a Thunderbird!
The Thunderbird, in Native lore, is a spiritual icon given to all of us by the
Creator. It is a symbol of strength, power, and fertility...and appropriate for
our community initiatives at C.M.U.C.
Our beautiful Thunderbird mobiles can be purchased through the office or after
church on most Sundays. Your name will be put on yours, and Tax receipts will be
issued. These birds are spectacular! If you want to see them, check out the
ever-expanding flock flying in the East Transept of the Sanctuary.
CMUC Teams up with BOB
Building opportunities with Business Inner City
Society (BOB)
BOB is a non – profit organization that is leading an
exclusive revitalization process for the inner city. (Revitalization without
Displacement). The
Vancouver Social Purchasing Portal (SPP, is one of the programs at BOB
that creates employment opportunities for hard to employ persons by encouraging
organizations to purchase the goods and services they use already (e.g.
catering, office supplies, cleaning, etc.) from a directory of local businesses
who employ these people.
CMUC is pleased to be a part of the revitalization process in the
Downtown Eastside through our partnership with the Vancouver Social Purchasing
Portal (SPP). As an official partner of BOB, and through the SPP
directory, we have connected with Mills Basics, a printing and office supplies
company located in the DTES who will be providing us with quality service for
our printing needs. CMUC will also be considering other services through the
directory as well, such as florist, catering, and cleaning. We hope that members
of the congregation will join in this revitalization process of the DTES by
making use of the SPP Directory, by purchasing goods and services through
suppliers in this region. For more information on BOB and its other
services, please visit
www.buildingopportunities.org. If you have any questions you can contact our
friends at the Social Purchasing Portal, Whitney and Amar, directly at
whitney.larsen@bobics.org or amar.virk@bobics.org or by telephone at
778-321-7671
Your contacts at CMUC are Mary Lou Whittaker at 604-731-3101 or Marion Robson at
604-732-4651.
In from the Cold /
Heat / Downtown Eastside dinner
Our next dinner will be on September 12.
If you have any questions, please contact Anita Kilberg.
Thanks everyone for your continued support of this wonderful
outreach program.
A Spiritual
Journey with the 12 Steps
Starting on Monday September 8, we will
be offering “A Spiritual Journey with the 12 Steps” again this fall. The 12-Step
Program is primarily associated with people in recovery from addiction, but it
was originally started by a group who believed that addiction was a spiritual
problem. Many are discovering that these steps can be used very effectively to
deepen our relationship with God/Spirit even if we are not struggling with
addiction.
If this sounds like a small group that you want to participate
in, please add your name to the sign-up form in the office or contact Mark
Tweedy at
mark@marktweedy.com or Mary Lou Whittaker at
marylou@canadianmemorial.org. It is recommended that you get in at the
beginning of this group, as membership closes after the first three weeks to
help deepen the trust. There is a workbook that guides this program, for
approximately $17.
Newcomers Lunch
It doesn’t matter if you have been coming to Canadian Memorial for a few years
or if this is your first visit. As long as you feel like a newcomer, you are
welcome to join us. Newcomers Lunch is a chance to meet the staff and learn more
about what makes Canadian Memorial tick. There is a chance to chat with staff
and with other newcomers before lunch. While we are eating, you have an
opportunity to hear how others have found their way to Canadian Memorial. In
addition, people from the congregation are there to talk about various programs
available at the church. The food and conversation are always great, and it’s an
easy, casual way to learn more and meet others. There’s no need to prepare—just
bring yourself and your appetite. All are welcome. The next luncheon is on September 7, in the Fireside Room after the Sunday service.
Street Meals Ministry
Street meals will
be meeting in the Centre for Peace on Saturday, August 16th from 9 to
11:30 am.
We will make sandwiches and lunch bags for the youth who are working in the
Street Youth Job Action program at Directions Outreach Centre. These youth are
employed to pick up garbage, clean graffiti, do garden work and other labour to
receive a daily paycheque.
Please join us and hear about our tour of Directions last month, and our new
bursary program for former street youth who are now enrolled in college
programs.

Techie Opportunity
Are you interested in technology? Or maybe it
scares you and you want to learn more about it. Either way, we are interested in
“drawing the circle wider” regarding our Sound System Team. We are the ones who
make sure that on Sunday mornings you hear every word that’s spoken or sung. The
board may look complex, but only a few of the buttons are used. It’s very
interesting, fun, and a great way to serve our community. All that is required
is one day per month. If this sounds like you, contact Neil Weisensel, Minister
of Music, by phone at 604-731-6819, or by
e-mail.
Web Casting Team
Goal: To put Bruce Sanguin’s sermons on YouTube
and to eventually web cast our entire service live!
Training provided; commitment of one morning or less per month. If interested,
contact Neil Weisensel, Minister
of Music, by phone at 604-731-6819, or by
e-mail.
Mugs and Bath
Towels Urgently Needed for First United
The Mission is in desperate need of any old
mugs you might have that could be used for serving soup and coffee in the
mornings, and any older bath towels for folks to use for showering at the
Mission. If you can help by donating either of these items, it would really be
appreciated. You can leave them at the office, and we will take them down.

Our wonderful choir help
us celebrate on Sundays. We're offering Mozart, gospel, and
everything in between. If you would like to get more information about
participating in the choir, please contact the Minister of Music,
Neil Weisensel. Rehearsals are on
Thursday evenings. For more on the choir,

Meditation
It’s easy and there are many benefits. Join us
Tuesday evenings in the Meditation Room at the Centre for Peace. From 7:00 to
7:30 pm, Sam Wyatt briefly teaches meditation techniques and theory. From
7:30 to 8:30 pm, we meditate silently as a group, using different forms of
mediation, and share inspirational readings
LIBRARY
The library is located in room 202 of the Centre for Peace. It
is open whenever the office is staffed and the room is not occupied. Books may
be borrowed for four weeks. Sign the book card in the front of the book with
your name and telephone number, and leave the card in the book card box in the
library
Maple Group has donated a copy of Captive to the
library. This exciting read is the account of a harrowing safari by BC
author/teacher Donalda Reid, her husband, and others to see the endangered
mountain gorillas. They knew this was risky but were not expecting the outcome,
as they were ambushed by Rwandan guerillas. I won’t give away the story. The
proceeds from sale of this book go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Thank you
Pat Crakanthorp and Maple Group for your generosity.
Other recent additions to the library are some books donated
by Douglas Todd. The topics range from the beautifully illustrated
Spirituality of Nature to the very controversial With or without God
by Greta Vosper. Also included are several on the topic of spirituality and
popular culture, with interesting titles like Secular Steeples and
Saint Paul Returns to the Movies. A novel included is A Garden of Ruth.
