We believe that each person is gifted with unique capacities that manifest Spirit’s intent for vital community. Some gifts from Spirit are innate.Others emerge over time. By recognizing our spiritual gifts and living our lives through them, we live more authentically and purposefully. We offer ourselves and our services more gladly and effectively in the communities we live, work and worship.
In an evolution of the New Testament churches’ tradition, Canadian Memorial offers Living Your Spiritual Gifts, a self-exploration in three phases - Discovering, Discerning and Declaring.
The Discovering phase begins in a small-group setting with a focussed enquiry into participants’ lives. In the weeks following, each participant engages in individual reflection with the help of a spiritual gifts indicator, after which s/he meets privately with Pastoral Care Minister Susan Du Moulin to reflect on the spiritual gifts discovered.
The Discerning phase begins with participants looking at existing service opportunities (ministries) at Canadian Memorial for which their gifts may be suited. They convene again in a small-group setting to continue this discernment: Is there an existing service role at Canadian Memorial to which they’re drawn? Do they envision a new ministry, either at Canadian Memorial or in the larger community? Contributing through ministry is one of Canadian Memorial’s foundational principles – ministry anywhere, anytime, by anybody.
The final phase, Declaring, is a short ritual conducted by Bruce Sanguin and Susan Du Moulin during a regular worship service. The ministers acknowledge the participants’ spiritual gifts and commission them to live into their ministries. The congregation then offers its support, encouraging the participants in their intention to offer their spiritual gifts in ministry at Canadian Memorial and beyond.
